Super Moon, did you catch it? Did you know that in January there will be 2 and the second one will be a Blue Super Moon since it will be the second full moon in January? From where I was viewing it, it started out through wispy clouds giving it that eerie feeling, then as the clouds cleared and the full brightness started to come out it light up the night like I have not seen for a while. On our evening dog walk I was able to walk without our flashlight at all. Although I kept it in hand for the motorists as my little guy is mostly black with only a bib, 4 paws and some of his muzzle white. But that night even he seemed to sparkle in the moon beams. I remember during our August vacations, going down to the beach and sitting on the jetties, and watching the moon rise and set. I remember it reflecting off the Nantucket Sound and the occasional fish jumping out and the ripples would sparkle with the reflection of the moon. And watching those tiny crabs scurry across the beach where the water had just been. I remember going out some nights with the fog so thick you could barely see your hand in front of you, but look up and slipping in and out of the fog clouds was that eerie moon looking for any chance to get its beams down to us. Anyway, as we walked along we were able to see things that even under a regular full moon you would not have seen, and being late fall (early December) most of the foliage was gone which allowed the beams to cut through into places most the rest of the year would be missed. If you missed this one you have two more chances next month, so lets pray they are cloudless, windless nights, then get out and see what your neighborhood looks like in the moon light or take a drive to the beach, (yes bundle up first) and see the beautiful sights that the moon will illuminate, and then remember you are on Cape Cod, enjoying something a lot of other people can never or will never experience, and count yourself blessed. Well I think that is enough for this round. Have a great week and enjoy all that is happing around the area celebrating the holidays, and especially if you can do it right here on old Cape Cod.
Last week I went through several restaurants that are open year round and that would be worth while checking out. I want to continue that theme this week, First head to Sandwich for a romantic dinner this season at the Dan’l Webster Inn. The main restaurant is a real treat and a really cozy place to eat, or make a weekend get-a-away out of it. Then there is the Belfry Inn and Bistro, this is a working in and a wonderful bistro that is always doing specials. They are doing some really special things for Christmas and New Year so I would call and get your reservations in now if that is where you want to celebrate. Last but not least is a the British Beer Company, Just like their Hyannis eatery, it is a wonderful place to get good food, a good pint and just a good time. There are more, so go and check it out.
In Falmouth we know there are a couple that have made the local Chronicle show and other reports, but did you know that Oysters Too is open year round? Right on Rt 28 in East Falmouth. You’ve seen it, you’ve heard about it, now stop driving by it and give it a try. Next, if you enjoy that Irish Pub feeling and fair then head to Liam Maguire’s Irish Pub right on Main St in the heart of Falmouth. And from the reports say, they can get the Irish music really going going. A third offering in Falmouth is La Cucina Sul Mare and Italian Ristorante. You want romantic what better way then with a special Italian dinner. Again located on Main St, easy to get to and a great place for a wonderful special dinner. If you have larger parties please make reservations, but they are open year round which is a benefit to all us year-rounders.
Last let’s take a trip to Chatham, I would be a mis if I did not start with the Chatham Squire. It has been a main stay right on Main St for years and is a wonderful place for lunch or dinner with wonderful food. Been there, done that and love it. Another wonderful place would be the Del Mar Bar & Bistro is a cool and friendly nightspot on Cape Cod for eating, drinking and socializing, featuring native seafood, bistro cuisine and wood-fired, thin crust pizzas as well as popular specialty drinks and an extensive wine list. Chatham has many year round restaurants, check them all out during the off season when there is, for the most part, no waiting lines.
Hope you are finding someplace new to eat and enjoy and finding out that a few older places are still around and open year round and ready to be enjoyed again. So get out there and support your local year round eatery.
Hi ya’ll, how you all doing? Have you been enjoying the weather? Hasn’t this been a wild fall, with only a few evenings so far that could even produce a few flakes of that white stuff from the sky. Frankly I have to tell you, that does not bother me one bit. I have to say the older I get the more this body of mine does not like the cold, damp windy yucky weather. It just is not good for the soul either, but it is what it is and to live the good life we must endure. Hey have you seen the reports, the Snowy Owls have been spotted and are back on the Cape already. I have seen a couple myself and they are beautiful flying over the dunes then settling into the gasses. I can not wait for more to come on down they are just spectacular to see, and flying around the tower is a special thing. As I am dictating this, we have had a report of a sad report to the south of us down outside the island, it appears we have had a tragedy occur in the fishing industry. This holiday season, please remember those families who have lost loved ones at sea trying to provide for their families, Our hearts break for their loss. Well I have to say since the weather has stayed fairly friendly so have the visitors. Even though the tower and lamp room is not open, they are still coming and checking out all the seasonal stuff I have been able to put up. And let’s not forget the visits from the local schools with the kids coming to learn all about what it’s like to live in a life saving station and be the light keeper. So life in general is good, busy, but good. I hope you are having a great start to the month of December and I hope you are able to come on out and give us a check. Now until next time, have a great and wonderful, especially if you can do it right here on old Cape Cod.
Well to finish up this year with the cocktails this not only goes with the theme but adds the element of holiday season into it as well. Also this is more of a shot than a full cocktail but who’s really complaining here. The holidays always seems to be a good time to try some new things and this should be one of them. But as I try to push and remind, be a responsible drinker, and be a responsible host, we want to celebrate more holidays together with our families and friends. Now, have a most fantastic holiday season and moderation in all you do. So on with the show:
This week’s recipe: Port & Starboard Cocktail (Shot)
