July 4th, Memories & a Cranberry Gin Fizz / 7-4-18

Well the 4th of July is coming to a close. Fireworks have come to a close for the most part, and there is one left out on the island of Nantucket tonight. A few towns have celebrations later on in the year that will have displays as well, like Sandwich Town Fair 7-13, Dennis Days 8-25, Harwich Cranberry Festival Weekend 9-15, and Yarmouth SeaSide Festival 10-7. And then don’t forget first nights out from one end of the Cape to the other. So if you missed the 4th, keep your ears and eyes open for another experience. I remember one year I flew from Ohio to the Cape over the 4th. I remember watching fireworks from the plane all along the way in all the small towns. It was one of the coolest things ever, then when I Dad and his second wife lived on an 800 acre lake, and we would take the pontoon boat out and watch at least 4 or 5 different fireworks displays going on in towns around this lake. If we had to stay in due to the bugs, and some years there were a lot. We could go upstairs to the bedroom that looked out onto the lake or Dad’s study and watch 6 and something 7 displays going on. Over the years while I have been here we have been able to go to one of the beaches here in South Dennis and view 2 shows down the beach while seeing a display on each of the Islands. Now that has been totally cool. This year with Nantucket’s being on a different day that will not happen. I also remember one of the first years I was here, we decided to into Hyannis and down to the harbor to watch the show. Only problem was besides being packed to capacity the fog decided to roll in and we only could view about half of the fireworks program. It was a real bummer. I hope you have been able to enjoy the festivities around the Cape and I hope you have been able to stick around and enjoy some of the other festivities and craft shows going on over the rest of this week and coming weekend. And please if you are a seafood lover get your fill, cause trust me it just ain’t the same once you cross back over the bridge. Well until next time, Have a great and wonderful and please remember to leave the place as you came if not better, and you locals, be patient and remember they pay may of your neighbors mortgages and help feed their families as well as yours. Until next time.

Welcome ya’ll and hope you have been enjoying this sultry summer weather. We have been hopping around here with all the guests coming to check us out. We have had a good breeze blowing up here on the cliffs so it has not been completely unbearable, but I will say that light town has gotten might toasty the last couple of days. And last night and this morning, well the air has been thicker than a hearty bowl of pea soup and from what I have hear on the old marine radio pea soup would have been an improvement. Surprisingly enough though for the majority of the day light hours the haze has not been bad and the tower climbers have been able to see from Race Point and the P’town Monument, down past Chatham light. It has been a wonderful time for viewing including some of our gracious whales. All I can say is the beaches have been filled to their capacities so you need to arrive early and be prepared to for a long day. And please remember no parking on the lighthouse property for beach access, they have their own parking and when filled that are filled. So with all that, I hope you come by and check us out and join the fun, and yes in the evenings we are still doing the pit fires with marshmallow roasting and S’more making. Well, use lots of lotion and please don’t get burned, it will come back to haunt you in your later years. So I hope to see you soon, and have a great and wonderful summer especially if you can do it right here on ole Cape Cod.
So this week’s recipe is sometimes featured at Christmas time, but if you look at the ingredients I think it is almost better for the summer than the winter. It uses a simple syrup, which is easy to make, I did not enjoy the recipe for that so just google simple syrups or in this case ginger simple syrup. You will find many uses for simple syrups from cocktails to ice cream toppings. and from a plain simple to just about any flavor you can imagine, and most are so very, easy to make. And once made you can store them in the refrigerator for several months. So put the stereo typing of cocktails away and try a refreshing Cranberry Gin Fizz cocktail this summer. Now just as the saying goes, be a good host and don’t let your guests drink and drive and if you are the guest either at someone else house or out and about the town, be a wise and smart guest and know your limits, or have a designated driver set from the beginning. Now on with the show.

This week’s Recipe: Cranberry Gin Fizz

2 oz vodka
2 oz cranberry juice
1 oz Ginger Simple Syrup
2 tsp lime juice
club soda
cranberries {for garnish}

In a shaker filled with ice, combine the vodka, cranberry juice, lime juice and ginger simple syrup. Shake until well combined and chilled. Pour into a glass. Top with club soda and garnish with cranberries.
